Great Torrington Chamber

of Trade

We are a long established fundraising group who donate any monies raised to local charities. We take part in many local events, but our main events are always giant themed Bonfires. Our last event staged in August 2005 was a half size replica of Nelson's flagship HMS VICTORY.

It was built over 2 years as part of the 200th anniversary of the battle of Trafalgar.

On the night of August 27th 2005 we set light to the structure to stage our own celebration of the battle and Nelson's historic victory. It was watched by 20,000+ people and had outside broadcast teams there from most TV and media organisation's including SKY who broadcast globally this year!.

Great Torrington is a friendly, welcoming town, set in the midst of rolling, unspoilt green countryside. An ancient settlement extraordinarily sited on an inland cliff top with steep drops down to the River Torridge below. This impressive situation offers spectacular views. In the very heart of Tarka Country, the wonderful landscape has remained practically unchanged since Henry Williamson wrote his classic novel “Tarka the Otter” in the 1920’s.

The Plough Arts Centre provides exciting opportunities for all people to experience a wide and vibrant range of high quality arts events both as audience and participants. Through creative partnerships the Plough Arts Centre is a welcoming and dynamic venue for artistic expression and education, responsive to the needs of the local community and a beacon for the arts across North Devon - visible and valued throughout the South West.

Find out why Great Torrington Town Hall is at risk and what's being done about it.

Towards the end of the 12th century a 'large waste called The Common'; was given to the people of Torrington. In 1889 the rights to this land were transferred, by an act of parliament, to an elected Committee of Conservators. They now administer 365 acres of land surrounding the town on all but the eastern side.
The area is freely accessible to all, and visitors can walk the 20 miles of footpaths, ranging from the golf course in the north; ancient wood and wild flower meadow in the west; and dropping down to the beautiful river Torridge valley to the south of the town. There is access from the Tarka trail for walkers. Car parks are available off the Bideford road to the west (old bowling green), and in Torrington itself.

The Torrington Town Traders are working with the support of our local council to promote our town.
